Star Wars: KotOR Remastered

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is perhaps the most loved element of the Star Wars intellectual property outside of the original trilogy of films and now arguably the adrenaline filled epic that is episode VII: The Force Awakens.

But times have moved on quite a lot since 2003, almost a decade and a half later; you'd find it difficult to find a platform to play these games on other than on the PC with the new addition of the game to the Steam Store this year. Even that doesn't account for the quality of the graphics which is perhaps most aptly described as "quaint".

(Original graphics from the Steam Store version.)

But now all fans of the KotOR franchise such as myself can rejoice! KotOR 3 has been announced by Bioware with Drew Karpyshyn as lead writer. The original SW: KotOR game is being remastered with updated graphics and new content entirely free of charge. Fellow Revanites, let me introduce you to:

Being worked on by the newly created "Poem Studios" which comprises volunteers in coding, artistic and voice acting disciplines the project involves in their own words:

Apeiron is a reboot of the Knights of the old Republicthat was released in 2003. Apeiron is a remake and remastering of the original game with added content, new worlds, missions, HUD, inventory, items, and compainions. (sic)
Though it's currently in a very pre-alpha stage they intend to remaster and improve upon the original game inside of the Unreal 4 Engine; it is unclear as of yet if they intend to use the original voice files or not.

The team anticipates no legal issues on the project due to he recent success of projects such as Black Mesa. They also intend to distribute the project for free making no profit for themselves at all, this is of course providing you own a copy of the original game. They intend to open a link for donations at some point in the future and if you want to help out yourself to make this project a reality they are accepting offers through the E-mail address of: volunteer@apeirongame.com

Current system requirements for KotOR are as follows:
  • OS: Windows XP and Windows Vista
  • Processor: Intel Pentium 3 1Ghz or AMD Athlon 1GHz
  • Memory: 256 RAM
  • Graphics: 32 MB with Hardware T&L
  • DirectX®: Directx 9.0b or better
  • Hard Drive: 3.5 GB
  • Sound: Directx 9.0b compatible
It currently has a Metacritic rating of 93/100.

So far the project seems to be promising with the initial pictures emerging of the assets something that get's  even the most jaded fan excited,

So there it is; potentially a development in the star wars franchise that eclipses even SW:TOR itself to the old school fans, if you're as excited as I am, why not head over and let the development team know!

'Dragon Age: Tactics' in the works?

This is the tweet which today flooded Mark Darrah's twitter feed to the point he had to stop responding; generating at last count over 12,400 responses and as you can see; the reaction was overwhelmingly positive, with a total of 78% of responders saying they would play a Dragon Age: Tactics game if it was released in one form or another.

Mark went on to clarify:

In separate tweets Mark continued to explain that this tactics style RPG game would be turn based and would not replace the mainline games of the series, simply existing as a spin off to the larger titles. It has also been promised that such a game would not be a micro-transaction cash grab like past additions to the franchise, such as: Hero's of Dragon Age or The Last Court. Which deserves to rot in hell because I still can't unlock that last glass customisation for Skyhold.

So what do you think? Is a tacitcs game like X-Com something you'd enjoy playing? Do you think this will even come to fruition or just fall silent much like the Mass Effect remaster that was briefly teased? Whatever camp you're a part of, keep closing those breaches in the veil and of course as always:

Gamers,

Let's Play.

Fallout 4: Season Pass Details

The season pass has long been a subject of controversy online; to some they're a way to save a few quid on the DLC for a game you absolutely know you're going to want the content for. To others it's paying for content that doesn't exist yet with nothing but assurances it'll be worth the value. (In regards to Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel I am firmly in the latter camp.)

However if you recently purchased the season pass for Fallout:4 then you're in luck, Bethesda have just released the first details of the upcoming content included in the season pass and it seems to be a fair amount. The items included in the season pass have been revealed to include 2 new story DLC's and a customisation upgrade pack. This mirrors nicely the DLC for Bethesda's previous title Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim which included first Dawnguard which was then followed by Hearthfire and finally Dragonborn.

But enough introduction, here's the list of content you're here for:

Since Fallout 4 launched, we’ve been blown away by your support for the game. It stands as our most successful title ever and that couldn’t have happened without you. It’s been truly inspiring, the stories, images and experiences that you’ve created. And now it’s time to share with you some of what we’ve been creating – our first series of add-ons: Automatron, Wasteland Workshop and Far Harbor.
- Bethesda.net

First off:

'Automatron'
Price: $9.99 USD | £7.99 GBP | $14.95 AUD
Release: March 2016

The mysterious Mechanist has unleashed a horde of evil robots into the Commonwealth, including the devious Robobrain. Hunt them down and harvest their parts to build and mod your own custom robot companions. Choose from hundreds of mods; mixing limbs, armor, abilities, and weapons like the all-new lightning chain gun. Even customize their paint schemes and choose their voices!

Then barely before you've had time to sink your teeth into that; get treated to:

'Wasteland Workshop'

Price: $4.99 USD | £3.99 GBP | $6.95 AUD
Release: April 2016

With the Wasteland Workshop, design and set cages to capture live creatures – from raiders to Deathclaws! Tame them or have them face off in battle, even against your fellow settlers. The Wasteland Workshop also includes a suite of new design options for your settlements like nixie tube lighting, letter kits, taxidermy and more!

And finally in May, just in time to distract you from the end of any studying for those of you in education:

'Far Harbor'
Price: $24.99 USD | £19.99 GBP | $29.95 AUD
Release: May 2016

A new case from Valentine’s Detective Agency leads you on a search for a young woman and a secret colony of synths. Travel off the coast of Maine to the mysterious island of Far Harbor, where higher levels of radiation have created a more feral world. Navigate through the growing conflict between the synths, the Children of Atom, and the local townspeople. Will you work towards bringing peace to Far Harbor, and at what cost? Far Harbor features the largest landmass for an add-on that we’ve ever created, filled with new faction quests, settlements, lethal creatures and dungeons. Become more powerful with new, higher-level armor and weapons. The choices are all yours.

That's a considerable line up. The best part? That's only the start, by Bethesda's own admission they have much more coming taking the total cost of all the DLC past $60.

This has lead to a slight complication however, as this is what they are calling an "expansion" of their DLC plans they are increasing the price of the season pass. The way that this will work is that the DLC pass currently cost $29.99 (£24.99) and will be increasing to $49.99 (£39.99) with the price increase taking place at the "End of February". However, if you've already purchased the season pass or intend to before the price increase you'll get the full list of the DLC including the upcoming additions which have not yet been announced at no extra cost, a rare example of the consumer getting more than they paid for.

So get ready for more scavenging and looting, buy the season pass if you haven't already and make sure to do it before the price increase. Finally, as always;

Gamers,

Let's Play.

Tales from the Borderlands Physical Release: Coming Soon

maxresdefault.jpg (1280×720)

So you want to hear a story eh? One without several months of waiting between the chapters, without outrageous download times, and that can be carried round to a friends house in your pocket? Well have I got a story for you!

Yes fellow Vault Hunters the time has come. Telltale's "handsomely" crafted five part adventure can soon be yours to own on disc as a physical copy of the game will release for PC, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, & PS4 this year on April 26th.

Tales from the Borderlands is the newest instalment in the Borderlands franchise as told by Telltale studios; famous for The Walking Dead Seasons 1 & 2 on console as well as The Wolf Among us, Game of Thrones, & most recently Minecraft: Story Mode.

Tales from the borderlands is the furthest forward in time instalment in the Borderlands narrative with episodes 1,2 & 3 taking place before the framing device of Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel and the following 2 demonstrating the most recent story developments.

Over the course of the arc the player will follow:

Rhys; The Hyperion corporate climber on a mission to reach the top, no matter how difficult the task.
Fiona: A con-woman with a heart of gold and a tongue sharp enough to cut Eridium.

as well as a whole host of supporting characters both new and familiar from the series!

Overall it may be the funniest game in both the Borderlands or Telltale line-up, and somehow manages to pull it off with an interesting story and some emotional moments as well that will have a large impact on the future of the Borderlands tale. As a long time fan of both myself I can highly recommend checking it out. but before you take my word for it; check out the trailer:

And as always gamers,

Let's play.

League for Gamers: The bright new hope of social media.

Yes, build by gamers for gamers.

So here's a thing that you may or may not know: twitter is being left in ruins. The stock is tanking to depths lower than ever before, "Shadowbanning" is running rampant leaving an entire user-base unsure where the tweets from those they are following have gone in their timelines and even fearing what to post next unless they end up as next on a blacklist/ blocklist. Other social media platforms are seeing similar tarnish to their reputation; as Facebook moves to censor political opinion and Tumblr... well, I think most internet users are aware of the stereotype prescribed to the typical user.

It can leave people feeling a little left out in the cold, even from beneath my 100w heat lamp. Many people are turning towards new social media platforms, from Periscope and YikTak to "Tsu", but all of these will be a free-for-all of everyone from your best friends, work colleagues to your Grandma who isn't going to appreciate your spamming of trailers for Mass Effect: Andromeda later this year.

Haven't you wondered; what if there was a social network  made by gamers, FOR the gamers, that wasn't quite as NSFW as /v/. Well, now your prayers have been answered! Meet:

No, it's not a sports team.

The League for Gamers. A brand new social media site that's steadily gaining popularity among the video game obsessed subcultures of the internet. It was created by Mark Kern along with a team of unpaid volunteers. Who's Mark Kern? Only the former team lead for World of Warcraft as well as a key contributor of several Blizzard projects who, though now retired is advocating for video games, and most importantly, you; the gamer.

The League for Gamers is still in a Beta stage and as such some features as still being developed, but it works essentially much like a combination of Twitter, Facebook and Linkdin. You can post updates with a total of 512 characters (a vastly more expressive number than 140) including links, follow other users and create groups to discuss and share ideas... much like the newly added group for this blog as run by yours truly. There are also facilities to advertise/ search for skills that are used by indie game developers.

But here's the rub, the reason why this - in my opinion - sets it apart from other efforts:

There is no draconian speech policy.

Nothing is off the table so long as it falls within the bounds of the law, no pandering to hurt feelings, no safe-spaces and especially no Blockbots allowed. In fact they actually provide a checker to see if your Twitter account is already on one.

So please, head over, show your support. Create an account and join the group for all the keks and info, share with your friends and get posting, but most importantly...

Gamers,

Let's Play.

I am fire, I am the RROD.

Origin 6 hour 'Dragon Age: Inquisition' Demo - Morrigan Approves +6

So in a move that is sure to upset staunch critics of EA's digital retail platform 'Origin'; EA have announced that "For a limited time." The PC version of Dragon age: Inquisition is going to have a free to play demo option.

The offer as it stands allows you to download the game and play through the first six hours of the campaign, more specifically an in-game timer will count down to when you have been playing for 6 hours before ending your gaming experience. This version of the campaign will otherwise be without restriction though and should you play through at a reasonably thorough pace the six hour mark should be enough for you to have completed the prologue and spent some time exploring the first area of the game "The Hinterlands" which is more than enough time to know if you want to consider making the final purchase of the game. If you do, then good news;  as your character and save file can be carried over from the 6 hour trial session into the full retail version of the game.

Also as EA wrote in their online store you can experience:
"A multiplayer adventure like no other: Get unlimited free multiplayer, including both multiplayer Expansion Packs with the Dragon Age: Inquisition - Trial. Explore the world of Dragon Age with friends. Experience incredible adventures and fight sinister enemies with friends who own the game and those playing the trial."

So there you have it, in an age where the demo is dying it's being brought back by the most unlikely contender in the area: EA, who are so famous for their less than exemplary business practices they won the 'Golden Poo' for being the worst company in America back in 2012.

Lets hope this proves to be as much as a positive as it seems, why not head over to the store front and pick the demo up for free? How do you feel about EA, are they turning over a new leaf or are they tainted beyond redemption, and is a free multiplayer worth playing if it's working on a micro-transaction system? let us know in the comments below and as always....

Gamers,

Let's Play.
